Residents have been concerned at the design flaws in the railing for the Ōrākei Basin walkway along the railway line. There is now a section of the shared path which is not aesthetically attuned to the natural environment of the Orakei Basin and the other walkways that feed into it. This design change was done without consultation with the Ōrākei Local Board. By enabling cyclists on the walkway it became a shared path and NZTA and Auckland Transport stipulated the necessity to raise the handrail for public safety. The new railing is 1.4m high and an anomaly compared to other shared paths along Tamaki Drive and Westhaven. Auckland Transport have indicated that they will look at mitigating the design flaw and that consultation will occur on other sections of this shared pathway. Further community discussion on the walkway is included in this month’s The Hobson.
