The winds of change are blowing for the busy two-level car park on Clonburn Road, serving New World, Jack Lum and other Remuera businesses.
Late last month the Board of Auckland Transport (AT) resolved to enter into a participation agreement with Foodstuffs North Island Limited (Foodstuffs) to establish redevelopment feasibility and consenting requirements for the development of their combined landholding at Clonburn Road.
While full details are not yet available, it seems that demolition of the existing parking structure, expansion of New Wold Remuera, and the construction of a high rise development on this site are among alternatives that are likely to be considered. In our view, parking should be a further key consideration – and should provide for at least the same number of parking bays as in the current parking area – plus additional parking for tenants of any new development. Reassuringly, AT is reported to have said that a minimum of 255 public car parks should be provided on this site – about 15% more than at present.
We expect that the Remuera community will be fully consulted before any development is finally approved. Updates will follow as more news becomes available.
