It may interest Remuera residents to know that KiwiRail will be carrying out essential maintenance works on the rail track within the Newmarket Triangle and Strand area.
The work will focus on making sure that the steel rail track is re-profiled (shaped) correctly to allow train wheels to run smoothly.
A huge rail-grinder brought over from Australia will be used for this job.
With the electrification of the Auckland Metro there is a limited time window to complete the maintenance works. Kiwirail will thus have to undertake these works at night when isolating (turning off) the electrified power lines will cause the least disruption to rail services.
It is anticipated that works in the Newmarket Triangle area will take place nightly from 11pm until 4am from:
- Sunday 25th June through
- Thursday 29th June
It is anticipated that works in The Strand area will take place nightly from 11pm until 4am on from:
- Sunday 2nd July through
- Thursday 6th July
It is possible that work in the Newmarket Triangle may be completed ahead of schedule, in which case work in The Strand area will be brought forward.
It is hoped that the work will:
- Help with noise reduction from train wheels on the rail
- Improve the reliability of the network
- Improve efficiency of the train services
- Increase the life of the rail
- Reduce non routine maintenance work in the area
Due to the nature of the required works and the residential nature of the two work areas there will be noise that is likely to cause a disturbance to those living and working near the rail corridor.
Kiwirail has promised to work hard to minimise any impacts caused by this maintenance.
